“If your patient is right, we’re up against aliens that can move during the day.  Because of that, night will be safer to travel:  cooler and under the cover of darkness.”

Looking unconvinced, her old friend said, “Right.”  He looked at Steve, who shrugged.
Carli understood his concern.  Since the alien invasion, they’d all been reduced to children afraid of the dark.

First Five Friday – Willow in the Desert

Chapter 10

Gordon and N.C. bent over a map on the war room’s conference table.  Gordon had not realized how vast the airbase was and was amazed to discover it resembled a small city.  Impossible to defend; there was no doubt about that.
N.C. knew what was where.  He’d quickly pointed out the most defensible position in the whole thing.

First Five Friday – The Willow and the Stone

Chapter 19

Elijah stood framed by the door leading out of the Rock, his heart pounding as he surveyed the landscape.  Nothing stirred, so he slipped out into the cold winter sunshine.  He made his hasty way to the tumble-down ranch house at the bottom of the hill.
Things had gone from bad to worse.  Leo spent almost every waking moment in the ranch's basement.

Her tone had grown uncharacteristically hard.  Too late, Carli realized she should have kept her suspicions to herself. She'd made it obvious she knew something was very wrong with the situation at the farm.

Lena stood in front of the door to her parents’ suite and steeled herself for another angry confrontation.  She knocked.
Almost as if she’d been waiting for her, Alex opened the door a mere second later.  Before her mother had the opportunity to say something ugly Lena blurted, “No one is pregnant.  I know you feel we’ll be okay because we outnumber Lilith, but I really think we’re going to be in trouble when we face her.”

He slammed his palms against the desk on either side of her, as if he would keep her penned in.  “Damn it, Alex, stop trying to destroy demonkind on your own!”
As Alex’s blue gaze turned icy, Lena rolled her eyes.  “Give it up Dad.  You know Mom.  She doesn’t play well with others.”

First Four Friday – Lilith

Chapter 19

Alex awoke to grinding pain and the hum of her talent.  It felt as if someone was sawing her guts apart with a rusted butcher knife.  She wanted to dive back into unconsciousness, but demon buzz prompted her to crack her eyes open.  Colwyn rose from a chair next to her hospital bed and smiled down at her.
            “Welcome back to the living.”
