First Five Friday - Lilith's Return

Lena stepped back in the bedroom overlooking the Pacific ocean once more.  The first thing she saw was the blonde sitting in a chair, staring straight ahead at the unlit fireplace.  The would-be starlet looked blank-eyed and slack-jawed.  It appeared that Satan had blown all her circuits at some point, leaving a pretty, if mindless, doll.

Six Sentence Sunday – Willow in the Desert

Carli hated to hear the Becomings referred to as bugs, but in the interest of moving things along, she let it go.  “He’s shown no sign of overwhelming blood hunger.  I think his Asperger’s is protecting him from going rogue.  Maybe it somehow makes him immune.  Even if he wasn’t, he’d have a good six weeks left before we’d have to … retire him.  He’ll be okay.”

First Five Friday - Lilith

Chapter 30

Colwyn and Jacob waited in the car while Alex went into the church.

She stepped into the hush of the interior and inhaled deeply.  The aromatic layers  of years of incense, flowers, and candle wax teased her nostrils.  Once upon a time, those mingled scents had given her a sense of security.  That time seemed very long ago.

Six Sentence Sunday – The Willow and the Stone

Renee raised her gaze, her ears still ringing with the blast from the gun.  The horror stalked on its wisp thin legs to stand over her.  The moonlight showed it in glaring detail; seven feet of alien.  Its proboscis writhed and lengthened.  The end narrowed to a needle tip.  Hypnotized with terror, she watched as a drop appeared at the end of the profane appendage.

First Five Friday – Willow in the Desert

"I rarely got a chance to catch my breath on this one...I just couldn't put the book down."  --Manic Readers review

Chapter 16

Gordon was horrified when he took in the situation at the main entrance to the base.  Carli, armed with nothing more than a flamethrower, was pinned behind the guardhouse that had once been the checkpoint for Cyrus’ comings and goings.  Her squad took shelter behind stacked debris several yards behind her, laying down fire when the mutants guarding the main gate tried to creep up on her position.  Many of the mutants were returning fire.  They had gotten hold of Kevlar vests and pushed large crates ahead of themselves as the inched closer to Carli’s hiding place.

Six Sentence Sunday – Lilith’s Return

“Are you sure you’re all right?”  Alex peered into Lena’s eyes as if she could see inside her head.  Her mother’s coffee-tainted breath was strangely settling to the young woman’s jittery nerves.

“I’m okay, Mom.  She didn’t hurt me.”  Lena was glad of that, because while not painful, being possessed by Lilith had certainly not been comfortable either.

First Five Friday – The Willow and the Stone

Chapter 26

            "Wake up, sleepyhead."
The rich, flowing voice stirred Carli from her sleep.  A voice like molasses, she thought dreamily.  She opened her eyes.  A thin, handsome black man smiled down at her, his teeth brilliant pearls set in his dark face.

Six Sentence Sunday – Lilith

He whispered, “God bless and keep you.  I’ll pray for you, for all of us.”  He stepped away but kept his hands on her shoulders.  Tears streaked down his cheeks.  “Be careful around those two demons.  You don’t know for sure what will happen when you’re no longer useful to them.”

First Four Friday - Lilith’s Return

Alex steeled herself for monumental effort.  She placed one hand on the sink next to her.  The other hand flattened out on the side of the bathtub.  She braced for the coming pain, taking a deep breath and clenching her teeth.
