Lilith's Return Now at Amazon and Smashwords

A spike in men’s deaths in coastal North Carolina.  Where the Catholic Church’s American arm of the Segreto once headquartered.  Where Alex and Lilith had fought.
Coincidence.  Has to be.
But what if it wasn’t?
Lena ran out of patience when a law firm’s ad aired.  She gave up on waiting for the news and sat down at her computer.  Moments later, she scrolled through a news website of the area.
The dozens of deaths were spread over three adjoining counties; Pamlico, Carteret, and mostly Craven, which sat between the other two.  To someone well versed in the ways and means of succubi attacks, Lena felt pretty confident that was exactly what she was looking at, especially since the victims were mostly young and middle-aged men.
What chilled her most wasn’t the evidence of demonic attacks, however.  Another headline on a sidebar caught Lena’s eye:  Church Burns to the Ground.  Her heart pounding, she clicked the story.

St. George’s Catholic Church in Havelock is being deemed a complete loss following Tuesday’s fire that destroyed the chapel, the attached orphanage, and the private school on the grounds.  Fire Marshall John Huffman has concluded the cause was arson and says, “It’s a miracle no one was killed.”

“Oh shit,” Lena breathed.  It was the church that had once housed the original Segreto, the entity once tasked with destroying demonkind on Earth.  The place her mother had called home for most of the first half of her life.
“Maybe it’s just a member of demonkind.  A retaliation, the family of someone who that Segreto killed,” she said, unaware she spoke out loud to herself.  Her own aunt whom Lena was named for had been slaughtered by the Segreto.  It had caused no end of distrust between Alex and Colwyn when they first met.
The pictures showed the blackened brick shells of buildings that surrounded the still-standing playground.  Alex had been raised in that orphanage.  She’d taken communion in that church.  Had fought their war until they excommunicated her for using witchcraft.  Then Lilith had shown up, prompting the Segreto to reinstate Alex so that she could fight off mankind’s bitterest enemy.  In the end, Lilith had wiped the original Segreto out, leaving Alex as the sole survivor.  With Colwyn, Alex had formed a new Segreto, one made up of humans and good demi-demons, the kind that didn’t cause suffering in order to feed on it.
One picture, that of the church’s white-paneled lighted sign, froze Lena.  She could scarcely breathe as she stared at the words painted on it.  She’d seen dark brown stains like those that made up the message before, and a quick glance at the caption beneath the photo confirmed her suspicions.  Officials had not yet confirmed whether the dried blood used to write the terse command was animal or human.
Lena stared at the four words that ran in streaks down the sign that would have been lit at night to invite the public to come worship.  Now it spoke a furious demand, and Lena had no doubt as to whose words it spoke.  Even as she reached for the phone on the nearby table, she couldn’t tear her gaze away.  She dialed by feel, her fingertips unerringly pressing the numbers on the handset despite the tremor that seized them.
When her father’s deep voice came on the line, a comforting rumble that had always soothed her, Lena still stared at the words.  She knew that as long as she drew breath on this Earth, she would never forget how the letters looked.  They dripped, obscene and angry, bloody like the mind that had birthed them.  The hateful order would be as if branded on her brain for all eternity, freezing her heart whenever it came to mind.
In all capital letters, like a feral scream it read, SEGRETO GIVE ME ALEX.
Through numb lips Lena whispered into the phone, “Dad?  You and Mom need to come home right now.”

Lilith's Return Now Available for Nook

I am thrilled to announce that Lilith's Return, the sequel to Lilith, is now available for purchase at Barnes & Noble.  The release is a bit earlier than expected, but for an indie publisher, it's next to impossible to control when distributors put the book out.  It will soon be available at Amazon for Kindle and print, as well as Smashwords.

Here's a little excerpt to enjoy:

Lena hugged Alex and wrinkled her nose at the rotten-egg sulfurous scent surrounding her.  Like most humans, her mother wouldn’t notice the smell clinging to her body.  “Been getting up close and personal with the dying damned again, Mom?”
She received a scowl for her half-hearted joke.  “Please don’t give your father something else to bitch at me about.”
Dad’s thunderous look came back.  “Oh, I smelled that shit on you.  Don’t think for an instant you’re fooling me.  You know better than to let them close enough to touch you!”
Great, he’d started cursing.  Alex often voiced the vocabulary of a sailor, but Colwyn usually kept his language clean.  He really was pissed off if he used profanity.
As the older pair resumed glaring at one another, Lena walked around the desk to stick a thumb drive into her father’s computer.  She eyed the bar behind the desk and considered pouring drinks for everyone.  Maybe it would sweeten the atmosphere.  Then again, it might make things worse.  Besides, Alex rarely touched anything but sacramental wine these days.
Lena sank into the leather swivel chair with a sigh.  Comfort and luxury was a hallmark of her father’s tastes and nowhere did it show more evidently than the office of Lasham Funeral Home, the nicest place to be laid out in Miami, Florida.  Gorgeous paintings of idyllic landscapes decorated the emerald and gold wallpapered walls.  The carpet was a plush rich brown, the gleaming wood furniture substantial without appearing ponderous.  The picture window behind Colwyn’s chair looked out over a small but perfectly tended garden area with benches to sit on and a pond fed by a small burbling waterfall.  Just the serenity of the room had calmed many a grieving family.  Colwyn’s demonic talent of feeding on pain and relieving the sharpest of human suffering only added to the peace so desperately needed by those left behind.
Colwyn’s arms were crossed over his chest again as he skewered Alex with his stare.  She stared back, one eyebrow lifted in challenge.  The tension thickened by the second.
Lena rolled her eyes.  “Sorry to interrupt yet another episode of ‘Don’t Go Demon Hunting Without Me, Dear’, but I have plans for tonight and I want to get your approval on these shots.”

First Four Friday – Lilith’s Return

 Chapter 10

Lena shook all over, unable to shut out the sound of the man’s dying moans as Satrina fed on him in another room.  She struggled with the ethical question of letting a succubus kill a Satan worshipper, one her grandmother had assured her had been party to child abuse and rapes.  Sure, a man like that deserved justice, maybe even death.  However, having to listen to him being killed screwed with her conscience.

Six Sentence Sunday – Willow in the Desert

Jon crawled to the corner where a nest of blankets waited for him.  They smelled musty and stank of his sweat, sweat that came from lying in the vault still hot from the day’s high temperatures and from the nightmares that made him thrash these last three nights.  He snuggled in, trying not to think about his friends, his parents, of anyone because that brought the crushing loneliness and fear too close.  Instead he whispered, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep…”
He recited the prayer, finding little comfort in the morbid words that had been taught to him with no thought as to what a child might feel saying such things.  “…and if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
Available from Amazon, Barnes &Noble, and Smashwords. You can get it in paperback too.

First Four Friday – Lilith

 Chapter 23

Alex followed her twitching nose to the kitchen where mouth-watering smells enticed.  Despite her growling stomach, slavering mouth, and flaring nostrils that tried to coax her legs to hurry-hurry, she moved down the wide stairs with caution.  She wasn’t supposed to be out of bed yet.  That’s what Dr. Thompson kept saying anyway.
